Defending champions among early winners

Defending champions Stella Maris along with South Ruimveldt, St. Angela’s and North Georgetown secured comprehensive wins when the second edition of the Smalta/Ministry of Public Health girls U11 football championships commenced yesterday.

The Woolford Avenue unit downed St. Margaret’s 2-0 at the Ministry of Education ground compliments of a Ludesha Reynolds double in the second and 12th minutes.

South Ruimveldt dismantled Sophia Primary 5-0. Lenisa John scored a double in the 13th and 22nd minutes while Angel Davis bagged a brace in the fifth and 25th minutes. Scoring a solo effort in the 20th minute was Sheniah Kingston.

Similarly, North Georgetown crushed St. Margaret’s by a 3-0 margin. Shamiya Daniels led the assault with a double in the third and 19th minutes while Angel Denny scored in the 15th minute.

Meanwhile, St. Angela’s dismantled F.E Pollard by a 4-0 margin. Maya Adams recorded a brace in the ninth and 18th minutes while Teandra Mingo and Tianna Cato scored in the 12th and 15th minutes respectively.

The event will feature 16 schools competing in an initial round-robin format. Upon the conclusion of the group stage, the top two finishers from each group will advance to the knockout round.

In other results, St. Stephen’s defeated Enterprise via walkover while St. Pius defeated Winfer Garden via the identical route. Meanwhile the matchup between Smith Memorial and St. Ambrose was a no contest as both teams failed while Tucville and West Ruimveldt battled to a 1-1 draw. Shania McBean opened the scoring in the third minute for Tucville while Gabriella McGarrell earned a point for West Ruimveldt with a ninth minute attempt.

Winner of the event will receive championship trophy and medals while the second placed unit will walk away with the corresponding trophy and medals. The third and fourth placed unit will collect the respective trophy.

Individual prizes inclusive of the tourney most valuable player, highest goal scorer and best goal-keeper will be up for grabs.
