Defending champs North Ruimveldt, Sparta Boss, North East La Penitence and East Front Road were among the winners on the opening night of the 6th edition of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown tourney Friday.
Staged at the National Cultural Centre tarmac in front of a large gathering, the title holders defeated Island All-Stars 2-0.
Nickosie Barker opened the scoring in a fortuitous manner in the 12th minute as an attempted clearance crashed into his leg and rolled into the net.
There was nothing lucky about the second goal however as Barker sealed the vital three points one minute later, blasting a powerful effort into the roof of the goal.
Guinness champions Sparta Boss in a dominant display, downed Broad-Street Bullies by a 2-0 margin.
With only two minutes remaining in the fixture following a score less opening period, Dennis Edwards grabbed the opener in the 18th minute, finishing into the lower right hand corner after being in a one-on-one situation.
Sheldon Shepherd sealed the win one minute later, placing his right effort into the centre of the goal after collecting a right sided pass within the left of the field, following a two-on-one situation.
Meanwhile, North East La Penitence secured the vital opening win, squeaking past Queen Street Tiger Bay 1-0. Calvin Moore was the difference, netting in the fourth minute after stealing the ball from the defender and finishing down the centre following a one-on-one situation.
Also registering a win was East Front Road who downed Alexander Village 2-0. Dillon Kelly opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a right sided finish into the net after collecting a left sided pass.
Shaka Jones then completed the easy win in the 12th minute, finishing down the centre of the empty net after the final defender passed the ball into his path.
In other results, West Back Road edged South Sophia 1-0 compliments of a Jamal Haynes effort in the fourth minute while South Ruimveldt and Festival City battled to scoreless fixture.
Also securing scoreless draws were Globe Yard who battled Cross Street and Albouystown-B who faced of with Holmes Street Tiger Bay. Action in the event is slated to continue at the California Square tarmac tomorrow.
