One of the three men held after the recent robbery of a Mahaicony supermarket is now blind as a result of injuries he sustained when villagers apprehended him.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that the man was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is now completely blind.
He said the man was positively identified during an ID parade yesterday and is expected to be charged today. He is expected to be charged with five counts of armed robbery as well as with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Four bandits posing as customers had held the owners of the J Singh and Son Supermarket at Le Raisonable, Mahaicony, at gunpoint and robbed them of cash and jewellery. They also stole the supermarket owner’s vehicle.
After an alarm was raised, residents of the area gave chase and the bandits lost control of the car, crashing into a nearby trench. One of them was apprehended immediately after the crash, while the other three took cover in the nearby bushes.
Efforts by residents and the police ended with the capture of two other men.
One of the suspects, Stafarei Alexander was charged last week and remanded to prison. He faced six charges, including the murder of Linden businesswoman Shevon Gordon, who was killed in April during a robbery.
