Enmore man found dead in gutter outside home

The lifeless body of an Enmore, East Coast Demerara man was discovered early Monday morning floating in a gutter in front of his house and his son believes that he was a victim of foul play.

John Peters, 51, of Enmore North, was identified by his son, Jermain, who pulled his body from the gutter just after 6am.

According to Jermain, his mother, who lives in another village, discovered the body when she visited on Monday morning because she wanted him to do business for her. “Me mother come fuh me and she start calling hard, hard after she see the person floating in the drain and when I run out I pull me father out,” the distressed man recounted.

Jermain said that he lived with his father at the residence for several years after his parents had separated. He does not believe that his father fell into the drain and drowned as it was too shallow. When Jermaine measured the depth of the water on Monday, it was less than two feet.

Although his father drank a little, Jermain said that the man was never in a helpless state and he would often ride his cycle over a bridge that was very narrow while he was intoxicated.

As a result, Jermain believes that someone may have killed his father.

Asked if his father had any disputes with anyone, Jermain said that he learned on Sunday that his father was locked up at the Cove and John Police Station over a matter involving another family member.

Jermain said that he went to the station and paid $10,000 bail for his father to be released and he brought him home.

Since another relative had a birthday celebration, Jermain said that his father left for the party. However, Jermain added that since there was not much alcohol at the party, his father along with some other men opted to entertain themselves with karaoke at the event.

Relatives from the party said that Peters left there about 4am and that was the last time he was seen alive.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed on his body today.

Peters is survived by his seven children.
