Five new land surveyors, who completed the 2015 Sworn Lands and Surveys examination, were sworn in at a simple graduation ceremony on Monday
A release for the Ministry of the Presidency reported that the five took their oath of office before Minister of State Joseph Harmon, who advised them to always be cognisant of the importance of integrity and service with humility as they undertake their new careers.
Harmon expressed the opinion that the graduates had completed a “serious process” and enjoined them to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures outlined by the Lands and Surveys Commission, as this would foster public confidence in the service.
“Conduct yourselves honourably. Do not accept bribes.
People will do that and when they do that they are challenging your integrity and all that you have learnt and you have to rebuke them. You have to show that you respect your oath,” he said, while stressing the importance of professionalism.
Valedictorian Elton Prashad, on behalf of his fellow graduates, expressed appreciation for the patience and encouragement shown by tutors prior to the examination.
However, Minister Harmon cited the need for a review of the process, since the current 15 per cent pass rate for the examination is not acceptable.
Of the 32 persons who wrote the examination, only five were successful.
