Two persons, including a teenager are patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) following a stabbing incident at Parika Backdam, East Bank Essequibo on Saturday evening.
Rajendra Deonarine, 34, and his nephew, 16-year-old Mahendra Sookhoo were rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
They were treated and transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital before being taken to the GPHC.
Deonarine sustained severe injuries to his abdomen and had to undergo surgery on Monday.
Sookhoo suffered three stab wounds, including two to his lungs. An MRI was done to determine the extent of his injuries.
Sookhoo’s father, Rohit Sookhoo, a farmer/vendor told Stabroek News that he was at the Parika market when he received the news around 8 pm.
He hurried to the scene and took them to the hospital.
He learnt that they were playing a game of pools at a shop in the village when an argument ensued with another man.
The man, a carpenter who hails from Ruby Backdam, left the shop and returned shortly after with a knife and inflicted the injuries on the duo.
They collapsed to the ground unconscious and bleeding from their wounds.
Meanwhile, some people who were consuming alcohol caught the attacker and dealt him a good beating and he too had to be treated at the hospital.
