A man was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday after he was found guilty of having 27 kilogrammes of cannabis for trafficking.
Deon Calder was sentenced by Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The charge against him had stated that on March 16th, 2015, police found the narcotics after a search of a Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara home.
Police had gone to the house based on a tip off and during the search in Calder’s presence they uncovered two large bags containing 11 parcels that contained the marijuana. Calder was subsequently arrested and charged.
After Calder was charged he had pleaded not guilty and after a trial that spanned several months he was found guilty as charged. In addition to the three-year sentence, he was fined $30,000.
