Trio snared in police sting get four years for ganja trafficking

Three men were sentenced to four years in jail yesterday after they were found guilty of having nearly five kilos of cannabis for drug trafficking.

Leyland Nichols, Dennis Yarris and George Wharton appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where they were each found guilty of a charge of possession of 4.772 kilogrammes of cannabis for trafficking.

The charge stated that the three men, between March 3rd and April 4th, 2013, conspired together with a person or persons unknown to traffic a narcotic. The three men had pleaded not guilty to charge at their arraignment.

Police had said that the three men were arrested after a police sting operation, in which a policeman had posed as a boat captain who would aid the three men in transporting the illegal substance from Guyana to Barbados. The three men were later intercepted by police ranks in a car with the cannabis.

They reasserted their innocence when asked to lead their defence at the trial.

After listening to their plea, Magistrate Ally sentenced them each to four years in prison and fined them each $30,000.
