Pepsi Sonics and Pacesetters secured contrasting wins over Eagles and the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans respectively when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League Championships continued on Wednesday.
Pepsi Sonics grounded Eagles by a 93-48 margin in their second division matchup at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Earl O’Neil led the way with a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds while Jason Squires supported with a double-double of 20 points and 22 rebounds.
Chipping in with 10 points was Kerwin Johnson. For Eagles, Mark Wills recorded a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds while Courtney Taylor assisted with 13 rebounds and six rebounds. The first period started with Sonics taking a significant lead as they outscored Eagles 26-12.
Sonics extended their lead into the half-time interval, netting 15 points while reducing Eagles to 11 to take a 41-23 lead. The assault continued in the third stanza as they outshot Eagles 24-6 to go into the final period ahead 65-29.
Sonics then recorded their best offensive showing in the fourth period, netting 28 points to Eagles 19 to seal the score line. On the other hand, Pacesetters overcame UG Trojans by a 54-46 score line in their u-23 showdown.
Nathan Saul was the top shot with 20 points and six assists while Jaleel Duke and Grenville Ferris scored 10 and nine points respectively. On the other side, Cosmo Evans netted 13 points and seven rebounds while Jumaul Cumberbatch netted seven points.
Leading 11-9 after the end of the first period, Pacesetters quickly found themselves trailing as Trojans netted 16 points to their 11 points in the second stanza to take a 25-21 half time lead.
The Trojans then marginally increased their advantage in the third period, scoring nine points to Pacesetters six points to enter the final quarter leading 34-27.
Nonetheless, the fourth period was all about the Georgetown unit as they outshot the Trojans 27-12 to snatch the dramatic win.
