Three men, including one who was allegedly caught after he found himself on the receiving end of a chopper during the home invasion of Tucberg Park businessman Nicholas Harrinandan, were yesterday charged with the crime and remanded to prison.
Brian Dhanphat, 26, who was heavily bandaged, Troyden Trellis, 20, and Kevon Sandy, 20, are accused of robbing Harrinandan on the morning of Saturday, November 14th.
The three accused appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and were not required to plead to two indictable charges of armed robbery.
The men are accused of robbing Harrinandan and his wife, Uwattie Harrinandan, at their Lots 22/23 Nurseville Housing Scheme, Tucberg Park, New Amsterdam home. They were robbed of a BlackBerry smartphone, valued at $50,000, a Samsung Galaxy S4 mini smartphone, valued at $58,000, and $250,000 cash. The charges also stated that the men were armed with dangerous weapons, being a gun and knives.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sherriff objected to bail on the grounds that Dhanphat was found with the victim’s cellular phone in his possession and that a gun was used during the robbery.
Both Dhanphat and Harrinandan, who was also chopped, sustained severe injuries during the confrontation and they were both subsequently hospitalised. Dhanphat, of Symthfield, New Amsterdam, sustained fourteen chops wounds and has seven fractures as a result of the confrontation. He yesterday accused police of beating him to call the names of his co-accused. He, however, pointed out to the court that he does not know the two men that were jointly charged with him.
Trellis, a clothes vendor of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, and Sandy, of Lot 58 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, and Diamond, East Bank Demerara, told the court they do not have any knowledge of the robbery. They said they only met Dhanphat after being held by the police.
Both Trellis and Sandy have had previous brushes with the law. Trellis is currently on a separate simple larceny charge, while Sandy is facing charges for allegedly being in possession of an unlicensed pistol and having two live rounds of ammunition without being the holder of a licence. Sandy had been released on $300,000 bail for the weapon charges, but his failure to attend scheduled court hearings since July resulted in Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus quashing his release and ordering that the money be returned to the bailer.
The three men were remanded to prison until November 25th.
