The two women arrested after the remains of a baby was found buried in a small grave. at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara. were to be placed on bail yesterday after a post-mortem examination proved inconclusive.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told this newspaper that the investigation into the matter continues and the women would be placed on bail. Up to late yesterday afternoon, he was unable to confirm if they had been released.
Police officials in ‘C’ Division had informed Stabroek News on Wednesday that a man had rented his Lot 8 Cherry Field, LBI house to a family and on Tuesday he managed to remove them with the help of a bailiff.
Stabroek News was told that the man returned to the property on Thursday to do some renovation works and while digging a section of the yard he saw what appeared to be a small grave.
Upon inquiring from neighbours, he was told that the young girl who had lived there had been pregnant. The man then made a report to the police.
Ranks went to the area where they found a black cloth in which blood and body parts were wrapped. The body parts appeared to be of a newborn, a police rank said.
Police had received no reports of a baby dying at that address. The protocol is that following any death at a house, the police ought to be notified so that foul play can be ruled out.
The investigation would need to determine whether the death was neonatal – after birth or intrauterine – prior to birth. If it is the latter, then police notification is not necessary.
