Defending Georgetown champ North Ruimveldt, national holders Sparta Boss and former titlist Leopold Street punched their tickets to the knockout round when the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown tourney continued on Tuesday.
The defending champion North Ruimveldt dismantled Young Ballers by a 3-0 margin to seal their place in the round of 16. Nickosie Barker opened the scoring in the 10th minute, slotting into the empty after collecting a left sided cross.
Colin Daniels then made it 2-0 in the 12th minute compliments of a penalty kick conversion after the final defender denied a goal-scoring opportunity within the penalty area.
The win was then sealed three minutes later as Lenris Carrington scored with finish down the centre following a one-on-one situation with the final defender. On the other hand, Sparta Boss laboured past Gold Star by a 2-0 score line.
Dennis Edwards opened the scoring for the national titlists in the 18th minute, slotting home into the left hand corner of the net.
The win was completed two minutes onward as Sheldon Shepherd scored, skipping past the final defender while cutting in from the left flank before finishing into the right hand corner. Meanwhile Leopold Street edged Island All-Stars 1-0.
Anthony Charles found the go-ahead winner in the 17th minute, bundling the ball over the goal-line while in the process of being brought to the ground by the final defender.
In other results, previous winner Holmes Street Tiger Bay secured their first win of the event, downing Festival City Warriors 1-0. Ron Adams scored the only goal in the 12th minute with a first time finish into the left corner, after collecting a left sided pass outside the right of the arc.
Similarly, Shopping Plaza defeated South Ruimveldt 3-2 compliments of a Stephen Dolphin double in the ninth and 10th minutes while Rawle Turnell scored in the seventh minute. For the loser, Michael Hussein and Stephon Walters scored in the 13th and 19th minute apiece.
On the other hand, Festival City Street Fighters overcame a two goal first half deficit to draw with Bent Street 2-2 in their group fixture.
An own goal and 10th minute strike from Ryan Hackett gave Bent Street the lead while goals from sibling Rich and Juslon Deen in the 17th and 20th minutes apiece earned the Street Fighters a share of the spoils.
Globe Yard and Channel-9 Warriors battled to a scoreless draw while North East La Penitence and Jamoon Drive ended in the identical fashion.
Action in the event is slated to continue on Saturday at the Albouystown Tarmac. In the opening fixture at 19:00hrs, South Sophia will oppose Laing Avenue while Upsetters will faceoff with West Back Road from 19:30hrs.
The third fixture at 20:00hrs will pit West Front Road against East Front Road at 20:00hrs while Alexander Village will tackle Castello Housing Scheme from 20:30hrs.
In the fifth matchup, Back Circle will oppose Broad Street Bullies at 21:00hrs while Old School will faceoff with Cross Street from 21:30hrs.
The final two fixtures of the night will pit Albouystown-B against Stevedore Housing Scheme from 22:00hrs and Queen Street Tiger Bay against Albouystown-A at 22:30hrs.
Winner of the event will pocket $500,000, the championship trophy and the right to represent the zone at the national tourney while the second, third and fourth placed units will collect $200,000. $150,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
