In excess of 1500 student athletes and teachers from across Guyana have converged in the city to compete in the 55th edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships which starts today.
The National Aquatic Centre, the open roads and the National Stadium will be buzzing with activities as the students and teachers from the 15 districts battle for the coveted champion’s trophy, medals and one year’s bragging rights.
Today, the ball gets rolling with the cycling road races (male and female), the 10km road races (male and female) along with the swimming championships.
The 10ks which starts at 6am, will commence outside GT&T on Carifesta Avenue, proceed to UG road and return to the National Park for the finish.
The bikers and the swimmers will swing into action four hours later. Male cyclists will race from Ocean View Hotel to Belfield and back (40km) while the females will roll off from the same point of origin but turn back at Strathspey (25km).
Tomorrow, the opening ceremony will commence at 09:00hrs at the National Stadium . This will be followed by the track and field and track cycling events.
North Georgetown is the defending champions of the annual fixture. Let the games begin
