On a night littered with drawn encounters, West Front Road-Gold is Money, Upsetters, Alexander Village and Albouystown-A secured wins when the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown tourney continued Saturday.
Played at the Albouystown tarmac, Albouystown-A downed former holders Queen Street Tiger Bay 1-0 in the ‘Battle of the Ghetto.’
Osafa Peters ensured the large viewership had a reason to celebrate in the 18th minute, finishing into the centre of the net from the top of the penalty area.
Meanwhile, West Front Road overcame East Front Road by a 1-0 score line in the Front Road battle.
Hubert Pedro settled the encounter in the ninth minute with a left footed strike into the right corner from the left side of the field.
On the other hand, Upsetters overcame West Back Road by a 2-1 margin. Josiah Charles gave the latter side the initial lead in the third minute, slotting home into the centre of the net after collecting a pass from Phillip Rowley.
Nonetheless, Orlando Ricketts equalized for Upsetters, racing down the left side of the field following a counterattack before unleashing a powerful left sided strike into the right hand corner.
The come-from-behind win was then sealed one minute later as Joshua Britton scored with a powerful free kick from the centre of the field, which went through the legs of the final defender.
Similarly, Alexander Village downed Castello Housing Scheme 1-0 compliments of a Chavez Lescott effort in the second minute, slotting his first time strike into the left corner from the top of the penalty area.
In other results, South Sophia and Laing Avenue battled to a 1-1 draw. Dwayne Lowe scored for Sophia in the 17th minute with a finish into the lower right corner from the left hand side.
Roy Cassou equalized for Laing Avenue two minutes later compliments of a right sided effort which went through the leg of the final defender and into the net. Similarly, former winners Back Circle and Broad Street battled to a 1-1 stalemate.
Rocky Gravesande pushed Broad Street ahead in the 13th minute, placing his right footed shot from the left side into the right corner. Nevertheless, Back Circle earned a share of the spoils in the 15th minute as Jermin Beckles lashed his effort from the top of the area into the roof of the net.
Old School Ballers and Cross Street played a to a 0-0 score while the Albouystown-B and Stevedore Housing Scheme matchup ended in an identical manner. Action in the event is set to continue tomorrow at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
Winner of the event will pocket $500,000, the championship trophy and the right to represent the zone at the national tourney while the second, third and fourth placed units will collect $200,000. $150,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
