Gudakesh Motie’s match haul of 9-98 and Vishaul Singh’s first innings 121 helped the Guyana Jaguars break a 31-year curse on home soil when they handed the Barbados Pride a resounding nine-wicket loss, roaring to their third consecutive win when round three of the 2015/16 WICB/PCL Regional 4-Day Tournament wrapped up yesterday at Providence. The 20-year-old Berbician, who claimed 6-79 in the second innings, broke the backs of the Pride’s innings.
He had taken 3-29 in the first innings following up on his 11-105 in the previous match with another fine exhibition of spin bowling. The former West Indies Under-19 spinner now has 23 wickets and three five-wicket hauls from his three matches.
Shimron Hetmyer (14) was trapped LBW to Sulieman Benn but Assad Fudadin (09*) and skipper Leon Johnson who struck an unbeaten 20 off a mere nine balls with three fours, finished the game with a thumping six of Sulieman Benn (1-31), steering the ship home as they ended on 43-1 in 7.4 overs. The defending champions now take their tally to 54 points with one more game to go before the season breaks for the Christmas holiday.
Overnight the Pride were trailing by 67 runs after they entered day four on 166-3. They were eventually dismissed for 272 after making only 104 runs in their first innings in response to the Jaguars first innings 337 which was set up by Singh (121), Johnson (74) and Fudadin (42).
After Johnathan Carter, who was given four chances, was dismissed for the top score of 89 minutes before play ended on day 3, Brooks who was 30 over night with watchman Miguel Cumming (06) took his score to 53 from 206 before he fell LBW to Steven Jacobs’ off-spin (2-105).
Rolston Chase made amends for the first innings with a stylish 50 but Jacobs, who was a bit expensive and Shimron Hetmyer, the best short fielder in the side, had the all-rounder out caught. Motie then removed skipper Kevin Stoute (06) before mopping up Ashely Nurse (02), Suleiman Benn (00) and Tino Best, leaving Mario Rampersaud unbeaten on 16.
The Jags now turn their attention to neighbors and arch rivals, the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at the Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad beginning on December 4. The team will now take a week off to regroup before round four.
