Slingerz FC finished as the point’s leader in the League Genesis section of the GFF Stag Beer Elite League, edging arch-rivals Alpha United compliments of a 1-0 margin on Sunday at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.
Vurlon Mills was the difference Slingerz in their final fixture in the 77th minute, latching onto a dummied pass from Devon Millington within the right side of the 18 yard box, before finishing past the opposing custodian, in process relegating Alpha United to only their second loss.
This conversion occurred after Anthony Belfield was sent off in the 39th minute after picking up his second yellow card. Due to the win, Slingerz FC finish at the top of the standings with 28 points from their 14 game campaign.
Similarly, Slingerz FC walked away with $1,000,000 for being the point’s leader prior to the knockout stage in the League Genesis round.
They will now renew physicality’s with fourth placed Fruta Conquerors on Wednesday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in the semi-final round. Meanwhile Alpha United drop off the summit of the standings to the third position with 26 points.
They will now oppose fierce rival and second placed unit Pele FC in the second semi-final matchup after the latter in the opening fixture of the night, downed home side GDF by a 2-1 score line in their final fixture to move onto 27 points.
The host grabbed the early lead in the 13th minute compliments of a Eusi Phillips penalty conversion. However the home side’s lead did not last long as Darren Harris netted 10 minutes later, finishing past the keeper after collecting a right sided cross from Gregory Richardson.
Konata Manning then found what proved to be the go-ahead winner in the 44th minute, striking his effort from outside the 18 yard box in the back of the net, after pouncing onto a poor clearance.
Winner of the knockout round will pocket $4,000,000 and be crowned overall League Genesis Champion while the second, third and fourth place teams will collect $2,000,000, $1,000,000 and $500,000 respectively.
