ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Barbados Pride manager, Wendell Coppin, has been slapped with a hefty fine by the West Indies Cricket Board for criticizing match officials, following the third round of the Regional First Class Championship which concluded Monday.
He is joined by five players – Jonathan Carter of Pride, Steven Katwaroo and Imran Khan of Trinidad & Tobago Red Force, and Steve Liburd and Sherwin Peters of Leeward Islands Hurricanes – all of whom have also been hit with sanctions for indiscipline.
Arising from the contest between Pride and Guyana Jaguars in Georgetown, Coppin was reported by WICB Chief Executive Officer Michael Muirhead for criticizing the umpires’ decisions in the written and electronic media in Barbados. “The Pride manager was fined 65 per cent of his match fee for his comments carried in a Barbadian newspaper article and on a Barbadian radio station, questioning the decision-making of the umpires in the match,” a WICB media release said yesterday.
“Coppin admitted to the offence and accepted the imposition of the proposed sanction. No further action was taken and no hearing was required.”
The infringement constituted a Level 2 breach of the Code of Conduct relating to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment on a match-related incident or match official.”
