South Ruimveldt, West Ruimveldt and St. Stephen’s stormed their way into the knockout round when the group stage in the 2nd Smalta/Ministry of Public Health, Girls U-11 Football Championship concluded yesterday.
Staged at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue, South Ruimveldt handed holders Stella Maris their first loss of the event as they won 2-0. Shawntell Richards and Lenisla John settled the outcome in the 16th and 17th minutes respectively.
Meanwhile, St. Stephen’s dismantled Smith Memorial 4-0. Kizieya Phillips led the way with a brace in the 11th and 18th minutes while an own goal and a Melissa Watkins effort in the 15th and 19th minutes respectively sealed the win.
On the other hand, West Ruimveldt downed F.E. Pollard 2-0 compliments of a Gabrielle McGarrell double in the eighth and 10th minutes.
In other results, Enterprise clinched their berth to the next round after defeating St. Ambrose via walkover while Tucville sealed their place in the next round following a scoreless draw with St. Angela’s Primary.
Similarly, St. Agnes defeated Sophia via walkover while St. Margaret’s earned a victory over Winfer Garden via the identical route. Also, North Georgetown and St. Pius battled to a scoreless draw in their final group fixture.
On Saturday at the same venue, Stella Maris, St. Pius, North Georgetown and St. Stephen’s were amongst the winners. Stella Maris defeated Sophia Primary via walkover while St. Pius edged St. Margaret’s 1-0. Shanique Ferguson scored the only goal compliments of a 17th-minute strike.
Meanwhile, North Georgetown dismantled Winfer Garden 5-0 compliments of a Shamiya Daniels hat-trick in the third, 10th and 15th minutes. Netting solo efforts were Angel Denny and Thanifa Phyllis in the seventh and ninth minutes respectively.
Similarly, St. Stephen’s crushed St. Ambrose by an identical margin. Leonanna Greaves bagged a double in the ninth and 14th minutes while Kizieya Phillips, Shanaya Gordon and Paulette Hughes scored in the first, 11th and 22nd minutes correspondingly.
Also clinching their berth to the next round was South Ruimveldt who squeaked past St. Agnes 1-0. Angel Davis scored for the winners in the 20th minute.
In other results, Enterprise defeated Smith Memorial by a 1-0 margin. Dewanie Crandon scored in the ninth minute to seal the win. Similarly, West Ruimveldt downed St. Angela’s by an identical score compliments of a Nikita Kingston strike in the first minute.
On the other hand, Tucville Primary overcame F.E. Pollard by a 1-0 margin. Shania Elexey scored the fixture’s lone goal in the 17th minute. Action in the event will commence on Saturday with the knockout stages.
Winner of the event will receive a championship trophy and medals while the second-placed unit will walk away with the corresponding trophy and medals. The third and fourth-placed unit will collect the respective trophy.
Individual prizes inclusive of the tourney’s most valuable player, highest goal scorer and best goal-keeper will be up for grabs. The other sponsors of the event include Smalta, Sterling Products, the National Sports Commission and the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
