Old rivalries will be renewed when East Coast Demerara (ECD) giant Victoria Kings faces off with traditional Linden heavyweight Milerock in the grand finale of the GTT/Limacol Football Championship today at the Mackenzie Sport Club (MSC) ground in Linden.
It will be a matchup of statistical equals when the action commences at 21:00hrs. Victoria Kings claimed their place in the finale after edging Topp XX 1-0. On the other hand, Milerock upset Winners Connection 2-0.
This occurred after both sides had to contest an eliminator match. Milerock has improved greatly since the event’s commencement and in attack, the Lindeners possess the marginal edge as they have scored 10 goals across five matches.
Clarence Huggins, Jermain Grandison and Denzil Fordyce have been the main threats for the Linden unit, with Huggins being the top shot with five strikes and Fordyce and Grandison netting two times each. From the defensive standpoint, Milerock has allowed four goals.
Milerock Captain Joel McKinnon in an invited comment, said his team is well prepared and raring to go. He asserted that the entire mining town will be out to support his team in their quest to claim the championship.
Meantime, Victoria Kings have scored nine goals during their five games. The evergreen Winston Pompey leads the charge with four strikes while the industrious Alden Lawrence has scored three times.
Defensively, the ECD unit has conceded the same number as their impending foe. Manager of Victoria Kings Everal Mundy told Stabroek Sport that even though the match will be held in their opponent’s backyard, a large contingent of their supporters is expected to make the journey to the mining town and he envisions a very competitive matchup. He thanked the organisers for staging the event while adding “may the best team win.”
While the finale will pit two regions against each other, the third place showdown will divide the mining town as historical giant Topp XX faces off with rising force Winners Connection from 19:00hrs in a match that could steal the show.
Initially pegged as the event’s favourites, the matchup will pit Topp XX’s defensive capabilities against the offensive might of Winners Connection. Presently, Topp XX have only conceded three times over their four matches which is the best record in the event.
Despite not possessing the firepower of their foe, Topp XX are very capable on the offensive end as they have recorded eight goals in their four matchups, with Travis Watterton and Oswald Benjamin leading the scoring with four and two goals respectively.
However, Winners Connection is the tourney’s leading attack with 11 conversions over four matches’ compliments of five strikes from Marmarlaque Davidson and two conversions from Keon Sears.
On the defensive end, Winners Connection have been disappointing as they have conceded five times. They will need an improvement in this regard if they are to emerge victorious.
