Four suspects charged over GGMC engineer’s murder

The accused in the murder of Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) engineer Trevor Abrams appeared before a city court yesterday where a new suspect was charged with the crime.

Rayon Paddy, 27, Orin Arthur, 27, Steven Prescott, 44 and Urri Vanwick, 26, were read a joint charge which stated that on February 27, at Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, they murdered Abrams in pursuant of an arrangement whereby money was passed as consideration for the death of the deceased.

Paddy, Arthur and Prescott were arraigned on the murder charge in April before then chief magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. A date for the commencement of the preliminary inquiry (PI) had been set for August 12, but was delayed due to incompleteness of the case file.

Yesterday, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan announced that the matter would be adjourned to January 11 and transferred to Court 3 for fixture of a date for the commencement of the PI.

Abrams was gunned down in a suspected hit along the Little Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

After the shooting, Abrams apparently tried to drive himself to the hospital but he lost control of his vehicle and ended up in a nearby trench. A passer-by stopped and picked him up and took him to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival.
