A Charity businessman was on Monday charged with killing a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run accident at Exmouth, Essequibo Coast.
Alex Williams, of Lot 287 Charity Housing Scheme Essequibo Coast, is accused of causing the death of 20-year-old Khemraj Singh on December 3rd.
Williams appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Charity Magistrate’s Court, where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The charge stated that on December 3rd, at Exmouth, Essequibo Coast, he drove motor car PSS 8501 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Singh.
Williams was also charged for failing to render assistance to an injured person, to which he pleaded not guilty.
According to the police’s case against him, around 4.30 pm last Thursday, Singh, of Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast, was driving his motorcycle along the Exmouth Public Road, when Singh allegedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with him. Singh was subsequently pronounced dead on arrival at the Suddie Hospital.
The driver of the car fled the scene but was subsequently arrested.
Williams was represented by attorney Roger Yearwood, who asked for reasonable bail to be granted his client, whom he said has a permanent place of abode and is not a flight risk. There was no objection to bail by prosecutor Ramsohoye Rambajue, who noted that Williams was placed on $200,000 station bail after being arrested.
Bail was eventually set at $300,000 in relation to the causing death by dangerous driving charge and $50,000 for the charge of failing to render assistance to an injured person.
Williams was told that he has to report to the Station Sergeant at the Anna Regina Police Station every Saturday and Monday at 9 am and his passport was to be lodged with the police pending his trial.
The matter was adjourned to January 12th.
