Ravens overcame the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans by a 71-61 score line in their first division encounter when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League Championships continued on Monday.
Following a slow start, Ryan Gullen top scored with 18 points at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall while Jermaine Slater, Ryan Stephney and Marlon Rodrigues chipped in with 14, 14 and 13 points correspondingly.
On the other side, Akeem Kanhai recorded a game high 23 points while Amoniki Archibald supported with 10 points. The matchup commenced brightly for the Trojans as they took a 16-8 lead at the end of the first period.
Kanhai top scored with nine points inclusive of a three-pointer while Archibald netted four points. For Ravens, Slater netted four points. In the second period Ravens managed to cut the deficit to five points, outscoring Trojans 17-14 to enter the half behind at 30-25.
Slater top scored with four points once more for Ravens while six other players chipped in with at least two points. On the other hand, while Kanhai led the Trojans with five points, contributions of at least two points came from four different players.
The deficit was then reduced to two points in the third stanza as Ravens netted 18 points to Trojans’ 15 points to go into the final period trailing at 45-43. Gullen top scored in the period with eight points while Slater supported with four points.
Meanwhile, Kanhai continued his one man offensive displays as he netted six points. Ravens eventually clinched the matchup in the final period, netting an impressive 28 points to Trojans 16 points.
Rodrigues top scored in the period with nine points compliments of three daggers from beyond the arc while Gullen recorded eight points. For Trojans, Kanhai top scored with three points.
In the earlier u-23 matchup, Colts dismissed arch-rival Pacesetters by a 64-48 margin. Stanton Rose top scored for the winner with 17 points while Kevin Dey, Jonathan Mangra and Orin Thomas netted 11, seven and seven points respectively.
For the losing side, Nathan Saul shot his way to a game high 20 points. Action in the tournament is slated to continue on Wednesday at the same venue.
