KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul snatched a five-wicket haul to give Guyana Jaguars a crucial first innings lead over Jamaica Scorpions in a low-scoring game before their batsmen built on that advantage to give the defending champions the edge on the second day of their fifth round clash yesterday.
Resuming the day on 63 for four, Scorpions lost their last six wickets for 83 runs to be all out for 146, with Permaul picking up five for 25 and off-spinner Steven Jacobs claiming two for ten.
Captain Leon Johnson then hit an attacking 42 and opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul, a patient unbeaten 39, to steer the reigning Regional First Class champions to 133 for three in their second innings and an overall lead of 176 ahead of day three at Sabina Park.
Jaguars suffered an early blow in their second innings, losing Assad Fudadin for nine, lbw to fast bowler Marquino Mindley with the score on 17.
However, Chanderpaul – the son of veteran Test left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul – held the innings together with a typically patient knock.
The 19-year-old left-hander, in his first game of the season, rebuild the innings with the help of Johnson in a 66-run, second wicket partnership.
While Johnson – also a left-hander – attacked to strike four fours and three sixes off 63 deliveries, Chanderpaul was content with the sheet anchor role and has so far batted nearly 3-1/4 hours, faced 149 balls and counted one four and a six.
When Johnson departed caught behind off Jacobs, Chanderpaul put on a further 28 for the third wicket with the in-form Vishaul Singh who made 17.
Singh was run out to deal another blow to the innings but Chanderpaul found an ally in Raymon Reifer, unbeaten on 12 at the close, to add 22 in an unbroken fourth wicket stand.
Earlier, Permaul added three more wickets to his tally from day one to send Scorpions tumbling and give Jaguars the early initiative.
Andre McCarthy, unbeaten on eight at the start, made 27 in a shade over an hour-and-a-half at the crease but received no support from the middle and lower order as Scorpions’ innings declined quickly.
