The mother of Denilson Rose, the 17-year-old who died after he was allegedly hit down and dragged some distance by a member of the Guyana Police Force in October, is hoping that the person responsible for her son’s death will be brought to justice soon.
Rose, of Lot 15 Nooitgedacht, Linden, was reportedly left to die along the Washer Pond Road after the driver fled.
The police, in a statement on the accident, which occurred on October 24th, had stated that Rose was walking along the Washer Pond Road around 3:30 am when he was hit by a speeding car, bearing the number plate PRR 6503. The driver was subsequently arrested and a breathalyser test revealed that he was above the legal alcohol limit, the release had said.
Speaking to Stabroek News last week, Elaine Rose, the mother of the deceased, said her son had left the previous day to attend the Mackenzie High School’s sports. The woman, who is a police officer, went to work and returned home around 11.15 pm the same day but did not find her son at home. She said she did not worry since it is customary that he would be out late.
According to Elaine, she eventually fell asleep and was awakened later when two young men, who appeared to have known Denilson, visited her home and informed her that he was lying in a pool of blood on Washer Pond Road. She added that she immediately rushed to the scene, where she saw his body.
A post-mortem examination performed on the body of the lad had revealed he died as a result of multiple injuries sustained.
Elaine said she learned days after that Denilson left the school sports with his friends and went to a club in Linden and he was struck down while he was heading home.
Elaine voiced dissatisfaction at the manner in which the investigation is being dealt with and she fears a cover-up, particularly since the driver is a member of the police force.
Contacted for a comment on the matter, Traffic Chief Deon Moore said that the case file was sent to the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
