Street football team Sparta Boss was yesterday officially presented with the prize for winning the Guinness of the Streets Georgetown Championship at a simple presentation ceremony in the Banks DIH Limited boardroom, Thirst Park.
The East La Penitence unit walked away with the top prize of $400,000 and the championship trophy after downing Channel-9-Warriors 1-0 in front of the largest gathering in the event’s history in the grand finale on Saturday last at the National Park Tarmac.
For their showing, Channel-9 received $200,000 and the corresponding accolade. Dethroned champ, North Ruimveldt collected the third place trophy and $150,000 after defeating former winner Back Circle by a 2-1 margin.
Back Circle for their effort, walked away with $75,000 and the respective accolade. In the individual section of the awards, Sheldon Shepherd copped the most valuable player (MVP) award. The top four finishers will now represent the zone at the National Championship in 2016.
Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste thanked the fans, media and the players for their unwavering support once again during the event, declaring that he expects to see similar attendances and support from the aforementioned during the other editions of the event.
Baptiste lauded the tourney which was played incident free and featured a record 58 entrants, while praising the achievements of newcomers Channel-9-Warriors who entered the event at the qualification stage and made it all the way to the finale.
Tournament coordinator and Petra Organization Director Troy Mendonca declared that the overall quality and support of this year’s edition simply highlights the growing popularity of the format.
He further thanked the teams, fans and the media for their support in making the tournament a continued success.
