President David Granger along with Vice-President and Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Sydney Allicock; Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally, and Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan, yesterday met with 12 Toshaos and a number of village councillors from Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Region Seven to discuss problems affecting their livelihoods.
The Ministry of the Presidency said in a release that the Toshaos, led by Casey Hastings from Kako Village, Upper Mazaruni, said that problems in the mining sector, security, especially at the border, and education were among the most pressing matters the group raised with the President and his Ministers.
“We have been raising these issues over and over in the past and now we felt that it is time to present them to the President…he promised to investigate them further and take action,” Hastings said.
Indigenous leaders from Kako, Paruima, Kamarang, Waramadong, Jawalla, Imbaimadai, Chinoweng, Phillipai, Kaikan, Arrau, and Isseneru were also at the meeting.
