Traditional rivals will faceoff today when Cougars Football Club lock horns with Rosignol United from 21:00hrs as the fifth edition of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Knockout Cup continues at the No. #5 ground in Berbice.
From a defensive standpoint, the East Berbice giant Cougars, will look to the experienced duo of Adrian Best and Stephon DeFlorimonte to thwart the offensive play of their West Berbice rivals.
On the attacking end of the field, the trident of Carlos Leach, Ron Wilson and Randel Hazel will be responsible for breaching the backline of their rivals.
Phillip Carrington, coach of the Cougars outfit, during an invited comment said: “Football has been inactive for the whole year at the association level. It has mostly been at the invitational level and it depends on if you are invited.
“Now with this tournament, we have to try our best. Fitness will be our problem but with the little fitness we have, we have to go out there and try our best. We can play good football, we just have to perform and as the coach, I have to try my best to motivate them.”
Rosignol United will call on the services of Randy Arrindell and Orwin Johnson to lead their defensive showing. Offensively, the likes of Mark Wronge, Cornel Taylor, Oswin Carmichael and Shamar Arrindell will spearhead the charge.
The opening fixture of the night will be a Georgetown versus Berbice affair when newcomers Black Water FC opposes New Amsterdam United led by the sibling combination of Adrian and Lenardo Adams from 19:00hrs.
Winner of the tourney will receive two million dollars and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will pocket one million, $500,000 and $250,000 respectively along with the corresponding accolade.
