Ann’s Grove sealed a quarterfinal berth in the second annual Stag Beer Super XVI knockout tournament after a 2-1 victory over Eagles of West Demerara Friday at the Victoria Community ground.
Shafeer Sanicher opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the East Coast of Demerara unit, directing his header into the back of the net following a cross into the penalty box compliments of a corner kick.
Their lead, however, was short-lived as Shelton Forde equalised two minutes later, finishing into the back of the net after an initial strike was parried into his path by the goalkeeper and the defence failed to react to the danger.
Ann’s Grove found the go-ahead winner in the 59th minute through Jamain Rogers who blasted his effort across the body of the custodian after collecting the ball from within the penalty area.
In the feature contest of the night, Victoria Kings downed Stewartville of the West Demerara 1-0.
Winner of the tourney will pocket $1,500,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place teams will receive $500,000, $300,000 and $200,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
