A Lethem teenager pleaded guilty to charges of drug possession and breaking and entering yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Between the late night hours of December 17 and the early morning hours of December 18, 2015, Dana Paul, 17, allegedly broke and entered the home of Allister Charlie at Lethem, Rupununi and stole a laptop computer worth $140,000. Paul, who pleaded guilty to the charge, denied breaking into the house and said that he simply saw the laptop near the window and took it.
According to Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, on the night of December 17, the virtual complainant secured his home and went out. When he returned, he discovered that the laptop was missing and made a complaint to the Lethem Police station. The prosecution added that the police, acting on information, arrested Paul, who had the laptop in his possession. It was later positively identified by Charlie to be his.
It is also alleged that when police searched Paul at the Lethem Police Station on December 18 they found three grammes of cannabis in his possession. Paul pleaded not guilty to the drug possession offence. He later said that he had bought the cannabis for somebody.
Subsequently, Paul was fined $7,000 and 40 hours of community service for the drug possession charge, and $50,000 or eight weeks in prison for the breaking and entering charge by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
