Residents living in the vicinity of the Kitty Market are upset at the failure of City Hall to empty a garbage skip in the area.
The skip which collects garbage from the market has reportedly not been emptied since Tuesday and garbage has overflowed onto Shell Road on both sides of the container.
On Tuesday, the the Mayor and City Councillors (M&CC) of Georgetown had advised residents that in light of a fire which continues to burn at the Haags Bosch landfill site at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, the routine cycle of waste collection has been disrupted.
In a press release, the council said it was working “on a logistical arrangement to have a temporary holding area in Georgetown.” These arrangements are still to be announced.
Repeated efforts to seek a comment from City Hall on the situation at Kitty as well as arrangements to dispose of garbage throughout the city proved futile.
The fire which began at the Haags Bosch site last Sunday saw the site being shut down and garbage trucks being redirected to the Lusignan site. However, Stabroek News has been informed that city contractors are currently dumping in the vicinity of Le Repentir Cemetery. That area previously housed a landfill, but its use was discontinued when the Haags Bosch site became operational in 2010.
