Breach: The section of the Bush Lot/Maida, Corentyne sea defence which gave away on Thursday. The contractor, Toolsie Persaud Quarry Inc is presently doing work on the breach. A release from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure on Thursday had said that part of an 8oo-metre section of the sea defence which was being worked on by the contractor had been breached. The ministry had said that it would be doing temporary work to secure the breached area.
Yesterday, Vice-Chairman of Region Six, Dennis Deoroop told Stabroek News that because of the El Nino conditions the drains had been dry and as a result, water from the breach filled them and rushed into low-lying areas. Some cash crop and rice acreage had been affected but there was no major damage, he said. The breach coincided with the spring tide period. (David Papannah photo)
