Two men including a murder suspect recently escaped from two prisons but while one has been recaptured, the accused murderer remains on the run.
Stabroek News was reliably informed that on Sunday, a murder suspect escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison.
He was not immediately identified but Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said an investigation has been launched and the hunt for him is ongoing.
Meanwhile, a prisoner escaped from the Mazaruni Prison on Wednesday while working on the farm but was recaptured on Sunday on the Essequibo River.
Blanhum yesterday confirmed that the prisoner whose name was given as Ishwar Khemraj was recaptured at around 9.45 am on Sunday by prison officials.
Khemraj, 44 of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo was serving a 30-month sentence for break and enter and larceny. It is unclear how he managed to escape and why he was not being properly supervised at the time.
It was only on December 8 that Stafrei Hopkinson Alexander, 30, of Lot 129, Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown and Robin Maxwell Thomas, 25, of Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, escaped from the Mackenzie Police station. They were charged on May 8 this year for the murder of Wismar businesswoman Shevon Gordon.
Commander of ‘E’ Division, Calvin Brutus had told Stabroek News that ranks on duty that morning heard a noise coming from the lockups and after they did a head count of the prisoners, made the discovery. A hole in the concrete wall was suspected to be the means of escape. At the time of their escape, the duo was being held overnight at the police station since they were scheduled to attend a court hearing that day.
While an investigation has been launched, there has been no sign of the duo since.
