The man who was fatally shot in a bus on Saturday evening has been identified and the police are continuing their search for the shooter whose image was caught on closed-circuit TV cameras.
The dead man has been identified by his fingerprints. This is according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who told Stabroek News yesterday that the man was identified as Trevon April of High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Blanhum said that the identity was revealed during a fingerprint test conducted yesterday.
April had been deported from Antigua.
Meanwhile, police ranks are still on the hunt for the suspect whose identity was discovered during the review of CCTV footage obtained from the bridge.
April was shot dead while another person, Rudolph Williams, 28, of Lot 3 ‘B’ Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara (WCD) was injured following an argument on the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The Route 32 bus, which was destined for Georgetown, picked up the suspect at Farm, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) while Williams and April, got on at Vreed-en-Hoop, WCD. As they were proceeding east along the Demerara Harbour Bridge, an argument began over the bus’s open window as it was raining.
From indications, one of the men wanted the window closed as he was getting wet and another wanted it to remain open. A scuffle then ensued.
As a result, the driver stopped the bus on the middle of the bridge to put the combatants off when the suspect drew a firearm and fired several shots before fleeing.
They were both rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital at Diamond, where April succumbed and Williams was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). Williams was shot once to his left foot and was treated and later sent away.
