A Guyanese man, who works as a truck driver in New York, was yesterday ordered to compensate a man after he was read wounding charges.
Darren Chowti, who is currently staying at Lot 7 Richmond Hill, Leguan but lives in New York City, had an unlawful wounding charge read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. The charge stated that on December 26, at Richmond Hill, Leguan Island, Essequibo, Chowti unlawfully wounded Takeram Persaud.
Chowti pleaded guilty to the charges read.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones stated that Chowti and Hill are known to each other. He added that at 21:30 hours, 36-year-old Chowti received information that Hill had assaulted his brother, which led to him going to Hill to enquire about the matter.
Shortly after approaching Hill, Chowti became aggravated and lashed Hill with a cutlass across his body and then to the left side of his face. Prosecutor Jones added that Chowti told Hill that he would chop off his neck. Hill sought medical attention at the Leguan Hospital and later reported the matter to the police station.
According to Hill, there was an agreement between himself and Chowti for the accused to compensate him for his medical treatment.
In light of this agreement, Chowti was ordered by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to pay a sum of $75,000 in compensation to the defendant for his medical bill. Given that the defendant lives in New York and would be leaving Guyana on January 3, 2016 he was ordered to make the payment to the defendant yesterday or spend three months in prison.
