Two separate larceny charges involving a handbag and pepper will result in two men spending time in jail.
John Harlen is accused of stealing a $5,000 handbag on December 24, at Regent Street, Georgetown, property of Wan Chin Ling.
The accused pleaded not guilty with explanation to the charge.
In response to Magistrate Alex Moore’s question as to why he stole the handbag, Harlen stated that he was under pressure because the wire in his left hand was broken and he needed money to purchase some tablets to ease the pain. He added that he is an ex-solider and since he stopped working things have not been the same.
Magistrate Moore stated that although one hand is broken the accused could have used the other hand to work to get the money for the pills. It was also highlighted that the accused has been convicted of similar offences.
Given this, the accused was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
Meanwhile, Raymond Khan was yesterday also sent to prison after he was read similar charges. Khan is accused of stealing 85 pints of pepper valued at $25,000. Khan was said to have stolen the items on December 25 at Robb Street, Georgetown.
Khan, like Harlen, was also previously convicted of similar charges and on one occasion was ordered to complete hours of community service for which he never showed up.
Khan was sentenced to prison for a period of 10 months.
