Food for the Poor (FFTP) has announced that 10 needy families from three regions are now home-owners through its General Housing Programme.
“Previously, the families lived with their relatives in extremely poor, cramped and in some cases dangerous conditions,” the charity said in a press release.
The recipients include Antoinette Blackman, a single mother of six residing at Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara and who lived in deplorable conditions.
Blackman said acquiring her new home was the realisation of a dream. “I am very grateful for this home. It was a birthday gift for one of my daughters and I. We are thankful to Food for the Poor,” she said.
Vibert Vansertima, a father of six children, whose shack was inundated whenever it rained, praised the charity for providing a home for his family. He wished the organisation well and said he hoped that others would benefit from its benevolence.
Karen Andrews, a single mother of seven children also expressed gratitude to the organisation as her family suffered badly when it rained. “The children could not sleep because of the lamentable conditions they had to endure and on numerous occasions she had to seek medical attention for them,” the statement said. Andrews praised God and FFTP for providing a sound home for her family. The Vansertima and Andrews families reside in Sophia.
In response, Chief Executive Officer of the charity, Kent Vincent, told the recipients that the organisation was pleased to help those in need. He urged the families to take good care of their homes and pledged the organisation’s continued support. Vincent and his staff then prayed for the families in each home.
The latest recipients of homes reside in regions Two, Three and Four.
