The Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) will kick off its 2016 season today at the Rising Sun Turf Club with a seven-race card to be held in memory of the late Mohamed ‘Nankoo’ Shariff.
‘Shariff’, the former head honcho of the Shariff Racing Stables, passed away in the United States of America last month after a brief illness. He was a prominent racehorse owner, trainer, breeder, importer and promoter for many decades.
The Shariff Memorial Classic 1400m D and Lower event will be today’s feature race with a purse of $1.2M going to the winning stable.
Other races scheduled on the card are the E and lower 1400M event for a winning take of $500,000 and trophy.
The G class event has a winner’s purse of $300,000 and trophy over 1400M.
An event for horses classified H2 and lower will see the winner taking home $220,000 and a trophy.
The horses classified J and lower will be racing for a winner’s cheque of $180,000 and trophy over 1100M.
While the final two events are for thoroughbreds classified J and Lower and K and lower respectively. The distances are 1100M and the winners will pocket $150,000 and $100,000 and trophies respectively.
