Marvin Somersall, who was accused of harming another, was yesterday released on bail after he told a city court that he was trying to defend himself.
Somersall, a vendor, pleaded “guilty with explanation” after he was read a charge of inflicting bodily harm.
It was alleged that on January 3, at First Avenue, Bartica, Somersall inflicted harm on Orin Persaud.
Somersall said he had been in bed when he heard someone trying to open the door. He stated that he spied someone turning the doorknob and he picked up a pipe that was nearby and hit the individual on the hand. He further added that he proceeded to open the door, only to see the individual, whom he later learnt to be Persaud, run away.
Somersall said the next morning police officials went to his home and informed him that someone accused him of hitting them on their hand and he was then arrested.
As a result of Somersall’s explanation, Magistrate Fabayo Azore entered a not guilty plea for him and, with no objection to his release from the Police Prosecutor, set bail at $75,000.
The matter was transferred to Court 1 for January 7.
