The body of a 49-year-old fisherman of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara was caught in a seine in the Corentyne River a few hours after he was reported missing from a trawler on Monday.
Relatives of Shahabudeen Haniff travelled to Berbice yesterday morning to identify his remains, which was clad in a pair of navy blue pants and blue checkered shirt.
They told Stabroek News that the body bore blood stains on the nose and a bruise to the left arm.
They were grateful that another fishing boat found the body entangled in the seine and that they did not have to wait a few days to find it when it would have already started to decompose.
A sister, Bibi Zamill-Khan said that she received a call around 6 am on Monday that he was missing from the boat.
Around 2 pm his body was caught in a seine and was drifting. She also learnt later that a fishing boat brought the body to shore and handed it over to the police.
Khan said her brother, who lived alone would normally spend eight days when he went out on his fishing trips.
He left in the 40-ft boat on December 30 with the captain and other crew members and was expected to return home today.
She said he did not have a special boat to work on and would go with whichever one is available.
He also worked part time as a cook in the interior. He leaves to mourn his
two sons and siblings.
