PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC– Former West Indies Under-19 player, Derone Davis, has signed a short-term developmental contract with South African franchise, Sunfoil Dolphins.
Davis, a left-arm spinner from Trinidad and Tobago, has a three-month stint with the Durban based franchise as part of a specialized training programme.
The 23 year old cricketer will be available to represent the franchise in the Sunfoil Series and Momentum One Day Cup.
“I am very excited to join the Sunfoil Dolphins. This will be a new environment and experience for me since I have never been to South Africa,” said Davis.
“Playing in South Africa for the first time will be a learning experience which will significantly benefit my career”.
Davis has credited South African cricketers Jacques Kallis and Johan Botha for helping him to secure the contract. Kallis and Botha both played for the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel at the last Caribbean T20 tournament.
“One day Jacques messaged me asked if I was interested in coming to South Africa and I immediately told him yes because I would not be playing any First Class or List-A cricket,” said the former Combine Campuses and Colleges player.
“This meant a great deal to me because Jacques was not obligated to do anything. In my opinion he is the greatest all-rounder of all time and for somebody of his stature to help a young player like me is very humbling”.
Davis leaves Port-Of-Spain for South Africa next week.
