Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has upgraded its protective wear for workers including those in the sanitation department.
A release from GWI yesterday said that this programme has been implemented under the guidance of Chief Executive, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles.
The enhancements to the programme include the acquisition of state-of-the-art safety gear, equipment and protective clothing for specific employees engaged in electrical/mechanical work and sanitation.
According to Health and Safety Officer, GWI, Christopher Cathro, “safety gear will now be purchased for specific categories of employees in order to provide for their particular needs and job requirements. The new system allows for the Health and Safety Unit to cater specifically for employees exposed to high voltage or potential electrical shocks”.
The protective wear utilised by sanitation employees will be more effective in providing a shield against harmful bacteria from the sewerage system, the release said.
GWI will also offer all employees involved in the care and maintenance of the sewerage system immunisation against infectious diseases, the release added. ‘It is imperative that we protect our sanitation employees from potential infections associated with the type of work they are required to conduct,’ stated GWI Chief Executive, Dr. Van West-Charles, “we have made it possible for all sanitation employees to receive free vaccinations against potential infections or harmful diseases. The health of all our employees remains a priority”.
The Chief Executive further said that no expense will be spared to ensure that all GWI employees involved in potentially hazardous tasks associated with their official duties are fully equipped with safety gear, equipment and protective wear.
“Our aim is to transform GWI into one of the safest working environments in the country”, he said.
