Paul Persaud, the Albouystown cart man accused of robbing a woman of hundreds of thousands of dollars in diamonds and other items, was on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of $100,000 by a city court.
It was alleged that Persaud, on December 7, at Albouystown, robbed Sonia Stanislaus of a handbag, a gold chain, a Nokia phone and a quantity of diamonds valued $350,000. The total value of the items taken amounted to $442,500.
Persaud, 23, of Lot 27 Hill Street, Albouystown, was represented by attorney Eusi Anderson, who put in an application for bail on his behalf.
Anderson informed the court that although Persaud has one previous conviction under his belt for marijuana possession, while that matter had been ongoing, the defendant had been on bail and still reported as necessary, proving he is not a flight risk.
Anderson further stated that the offence his client is being charged for occurred at night, raising issues with identification.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones stated that he had no objections to substantial bail being granted to Persaud, leading Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to grant the defendant same in the sum of $100,000. The matter has been adjourned to January 18 for statements.
At the arraignment, Jones had objected to bail being granted to Persaud, who was unrepresented, due to the seriousness and prevalence of the crime and he noted that none of the items has since been recovered.
