A La Penitence man maintained his innocence yesterday when he appeared in a city court charged with stealing almost $3 million in goods during two break-ins at an Industrial Site bond.
The city court of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that Fredrick Gomes, 24, of Sideline Dam, La Penitence, allegedly broke and entered the bond of Ravindranauth Rampersaud at Lot 30 Industrial Site, Ruimveldt, between January 2nd and 3rd, and January 5th and 6th.
It is alleged that during the break-ins Gomes stole 12 music systems, mats, ladies purses, curtains and 100 carpets, totaling $2.9 million in total value.
Gomes pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, six musical systems and a carpet were recovered from Gomes. The prosecutor also objected to Gomes being granted bail since there are more charges to be made out against him.
Jones added that although investigations are ongoing, Gomes did admit that he was at the bond and he picked up the items.
Gomes, when given a chance to speak, said that some boys known to him left the items on the road and he took them. He, however, denied breaking and entering the bond.
Gomes was subsequently granted bail, which was set at $60,000. He is to return to court on January 26th.
