Murchy Noorhan was yesterday sentenced to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a family member, who was also a minor.
He was sentenced to 20 years on each of two counts of the offence.
Trial Judge Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered that the sentences be served consecutively.
In sentencing, the judge underscored that the offences were committed on two different dates, showing that the act was repeated against the complainant.
On December 11 last, Noorhan had been convicted of the offences by a 12-member jury at the conclusion of his trial.
He was found guilty on the two charges, which stated that on January 4th and January 5th, 2013, he engaged in sexual activities with a child/family member under the age of 18.
The jury returned unanimous verdicts after about two hours of deliberations.
The convict’s sentence had however, been deferred to yesterday, to facilitate the presentation of a probation report, which his attorney, James Bond, had requested.
The trial was held in camera at the High Court in Georgetown.
The state was represented by attorneys Stacy Goodings and Siand Dhurjon. They called six witnesses to the stand to establish the state’s case against Noorhan.
