The dead man in the yacht that was spotted almost a week ago about 200 miles off Guyana’s Coast has been identified as French national Mocbel Robert Lois Bozier, 70, who was found with a single gunshot wound to the face that is believed to have been self-inflicted.
A dog that was also on the yacht also appeared to have been shot.
The yacht, named Allegro, was taken to the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard Headquarters at Ruimveldt yesterday morning. with the decomposing bodies of a man and dog aboard.
The man was identified as Bozier from a passport that was found on the vessel. The yacht flew a French flag.
Police investigators believe that the man shot his dog before turning the weapon on himself. Sources say that this conclusion has been drawn based on the position of the man’s body when it was found and the fact that a shotgun was found under his body.
There appeared to be no sign of foul play on the vessel.
It is unclear where the man might have been heading.
A post-mortem examination is to be conducted shortly and police have already made contact with their French counterparts, who are expected to arrive in Guyana shortly to assist with the investigation.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, when contacted shortly after the vessel arrived in Georgetown, said investigators who ventured to the location, which is some 200 miles offshore Guyana, reported that a single gunshot wound was seen on the man’s face.
He was found sitting in a curled position and the shotgun was found under his body. Blanhum said that apart from that weapon, three other shotguns were found on the yacht.
Last Monday, passengers on a cruise liner saw the man and dog drifting in a yacht and they both appeared to be dead.
The travelers immediately alerted the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) and the police were informed and two investigators were later dispatched to the location along with members of the Coast Guard.
