A three-member team of amateur boxers will wing out tomorrow for Trinidad to represent Guyana at a one-night championship on Tuesday.
According to Technical Director of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Terrence Poole, Deshon Elcock (junior,60kgs), Joel Williamson (elite, 60kgs) and Jamal Eastman (elite,56kgs) are the Simon Pures named to compete under the Golden Arrowhead.
Trinidad had requested six boxers but since most of the locals are not in full training, the team was sliced in half.
“We accepted the request from Trinidad basically because we are trying to uphold the practice of Caribbean unity” said GBA president Steve Ninvalle.
“We rely on several Caribbean countries at times and we want to make sure that they can rely on us also when it’s time to step up to the plate.”
Ninvalle added that since that the GBA has started the year on an international note “We hope that there are several international competitions that our boxers can attend during the course of 2016.”
He then further disclosed that the GBA will be hosting an International School Boys and juniors competition in the not too distant future.
“Because Caribbean as a whole will be looking at that group since they will be the champions for the next five to 10 years.”
The boxers along with Coach Gregory Cort (also Head Coach of the Rose Hall Jammers) are scheduled to return on Wednesday.
