With the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Futsal Tournament scheduled for January 22nd-26th, the Guyana National Futsal Team will officially be encamped from Friday as preparations intensify ahead of their international campaign.
Although the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has not disclosed the composition of the squad following trials at the National Gymnasium, the squad is expected to depart local shores on Tuesday for Cuba.
GFF Technical Director Claude Bolton alongside former Golden Jaguar Senior Head-Coach Denzil Thompson conducted the three-day trials which featured over 30 players from various associations. The squad is expected to be trimmed to 16 players prior to the encampment.
Guyana is in Group `A’ with Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda and Haiti. Group-B which will be headed by Cuba, will also consist of St. Maarten, Costa Rica and Guadeloupe.
The eventual top two finishers from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) tournament will advance to the CONCACAF Futsal Championship which is slated to be staged in Costa Rica during the month of May.
Identical to previous editions, the tournament will act as the CONCACAF qualifiers for the FIFA Futsal World Cup. The top four teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Colombia as the CONCACAF representatives.
Guyana last participating at the CFU Futsal Tournament came in 2008, where they finished fourth in the group behind winners and host Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti (second place) and Suriname (third place).
