The Ministry of Social Protection is backing an initiative by Queen’s College students to counter human trafficking (TIP) in Guyana, a release from the Ministry said yesterday.
In commending the initiative by the students during a face-to-face meeting at the school yesterday, Social Protection Minister, Volda Lawrence assured them that there are greater possibilities for partnership between schools and the government.
“I am happy you have started your efforts in the schools…I do believe that young people are more likely to hear the messages coming from someone their own age.
We are certainly happy to partner with your team and we will include you in not only human trafficking counter initiatives, but in our many efforts to address other social issues,” Lawrence was reported as saying
The counter-TIP initiative is the brainchild of Fifth Form student Gabriella Bacchus under the hashtag BURNTHEPRICETAG.
Under the plan there will be the first in a series of planned public awareness session tomorrow with a walkathon starting at 06:00hrs from the School’s compound. Participants will proceed south into Camp Street, west into Lamaha Street and north into Albert Street before stopping at the National Park for a rally.
Bacchus and fellow student, Sadiya Yahya yesterday presented their plans to Lawrence in the presence of Headmistress Jackie Benn, Head of Department for Social Studies, Joy Brown and English Teacher Osafa DeSantos.
