The husband of Hafeeza Rohoman, the Helena, Mahaica woman found floating in a trench on Sunday, has confessed to the crime, according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum.
Blanhum said Lakeram Harrinarine, called “Ricky,” was yesterday arrested by police and has since given a confession. Harrinarine reportedly told investigators that he and the woman came to blows as he pleaded with her to return home. He is claiming that she dealt him a single blow to the head with a bicycle bar and he retaliated by hitting her twice to the head. She fell into the nearby trench and drowned.
This newspaper had previously reported that the partly decomposed body of Rohoman, 28, was found in a trench on Sunday, some 10 minutes away from her home.
A post-mortem examination revealed that she died from drowning but also uncovered the fact that she had suffered blows to the head.
The dead woman was last seen alive by her sister Shaneeza Rohoman, who had told Stabroek News that the she was a victim of domestic abuse.
Neighbours and family had also stated that while both Harrinarine and Rohoman were alcoholics, the man would often beat her and prevent her from seeing her children, who would stay at her relatives.
