Dear Editor
In response to the letter published in Stabroek News dated January 6, 2016 and captioned, ‘Meter readers should be supervised’ the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) wishes to unequivocally state the following:
Electricity Charges
We have standard charges that are applicable to customers of various tariff categories. We do not and cannot arbitrarily adjust these charges to facilitate our cash flow. Any such change must be approved by the Public Utilities Commission.
Disconnection
December 2015, Disconnection Notice: GPL provided clarification in the print media earlier this month.
Meter readings
Our company employs meter readers who retrieve readings on a monthly basis. Where our records confirm that we have accounts with a minimum of three consecutive months of estimated billings we conduct a thorough investigation to determine the root causes in order to take corrective action.
GPL encourages customers to relocate their meter, which will better facilitate the monthly retrieval of readings. This is a very simple process and can be accommodated at any one of our commercial offices.
Availability of cashiers
GPL makes efforts to maintain an optimum number of cashiers to process payments. We also do encourage our valued customers to utilize our payment agents.
We sincerely hope we have addressed the letter-writer’s concerns and we can assure him that GPL will continuously strive to improve our quality of service to our customers.
Yours faithfully,
Shevion Sears-Murray
Public Relations Officer
